Overview

The Church of Panagia Eleousa is an ancient structure located on the eastern edge of the village of Kato Drys, surrounded by traditional houses. Dating back to the 12th century, this small church has been restored by the Antiquities Department and can accommodate a modest 20 worshippers. Its exterior, crafted of stone, features the single-aisle Byzantine architectural style, while its interior is simple and adorned with a wooden icon screen and two Psalters. Of special significance to the Kato Drys community are two very old icons of the Virgin Mary that were protected from destruction during the Turkish rule and the Crusades by covering them with a golden hagiographic "shirt". These icons can now be found on the icon screen of the Panagia Eleousa church. The church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption on the 15th of August with grand festivities, making it a memorable and meaningful day for the inhabitants of Kato Drys.
