Phillipos Kritiotis The two young men, Philip I. Kritiotis and Kostakis Savvidis, hailed from Statos. In 1974, they were serving in the National Guard. Both were killed in the tragic summer of '74. When the coup d'état broke out, Philip I. Kritiotis (1954-1974) was on leave in Stato. As soon as the coup was announced, he went to Nicosia to join the resistance. According to testimonies, he ended up at the Limassol Municipal School to take part in the fighting that was taking place there. On 16 July, Kritiotis was arrested and subsequently executed by members of the coup organization EOKA В'. The graves and busts of the two heroes adorn the courtyard of the church of the Transfiguration of Christ the Saviour in the village of Statos - Agios Fotios and memorialize their sacrifice. Kostakis Savvidis (1955-1974) fell while fighting during the Turkish invasion of 1974. After the Turkish troops landed on the island, Savvidis, as a cadet officer, was called upon to defend his native land. On 16 August 1974, Savvidis and his fellow soldiers tried to stop the invaders' march on the heights of Aglantzia. In this battle, Savvidis drew his final breath.
