Overview

Situated along the main road that traverses the picturesque village of Pano Kivides in the western Limassol district, a captivating sign beckons drivers to embark on a journey towards one of Cyprus' most remarkable chapels. As travelers follow this trail, they encounter a sight unlike any other on the island—a sanctuary dedicated to the esteemed Agioi Akindinoi, the only one of its kind in all of Cyprus. Nestled amidst a lush landscape adorned with verdant Mediterranean trees such as carob and olive, this small yet humble chapel stands as a testament to the devotion of the local community. A perennial olive tree, its trunk bearing a hollow large enough to shelter a grown person, extends a gracious welcome within the chapel's courtyard. Crafted from enduring stone, the chapel pays homage to the esteemed Saints Akindinos, Afthonios, Pegasios, Anembodistos, and Elpidoforos. These five revered saints once held positions within the court of the Persian King Sabor II, back in the year 355 A.C. When they bravely professed their unwavering faith in Christ, they were promptly apprehended and subjected to unimaginable torment. Despite their torturers' attempts to consume them in flames, a captivating legend tells of their fervent prayers summoning forth a tempestuous storm, extinguishing the raging inferno. Witnessing this awe-inspiring display, the Persian King was seized by terror, ultimately resorting to decapitating Afthonios and consigning the remaining saints to a scorching furnace. The Chapel of Saints Akindinoi stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of these courageous individuals, commemorating their unwavering devotion to their faith. Each year, on the first Sunday following Easter, the chapel becomes a focal point of grand celebration, where the local community gathers to honor the memory of these extraordinary saints.
