Overview

The Church of Agios Georgios is a small and simple country church located on the south side of the village, a few meters outside of the settlement. Built in 1950 with local stone, it can only accommodate 20 worshippers. The interior of the church is simple and modest, reflecting the humble and austere nature of the church. The church is dedicated to Saint George and is built near a cave that the Saint is believed to have visited. The church was built as a result of a miracle that occurred during the time when the inhabitants of the village were mostly occupied with the making of embroideries, as the terrain was not suitable for farming. A merchant of embroideries, Michael Hadjiorthodoxou, feared that the customs inspectors would open the bags containing the embroideries and prayed to Saint George. When he returned from abroad with the money from the sale of the embroideries, he used the funds to build the church in honor of the Saint. The icon of Saint George in the church is from the Renaissance era and is believed to have come from the fathers of the Stavrovouni Monastery. The church is not often officiated, but is a site of many prayers and requests. The church celebrates Saint George's day on the 23rd of April with a liturgical service and a procession with the Saint's icon.
