Overview
Located next to the river Kourris and between Pelendri and Amiantos, the chapel carries with it a huge history. The history of the chapel's building dates back to the time of the Ottoman Empire on the island. When Christians were persecuted and priests were beheaded, the inhabitants of Pelendri wanted to protect the icon of the Virgin Mary of Galilee, the origin of which dates back to about 1700 AD. To protect it, they buried it in a secret place. As the years passed, the Virgin Mary appeared in the dream of a bailiff , indicating the place where she was buried and asking her to return it back to Pelendri. Avoiding the danger , the woman found the spot, where the church was built in 1970 and returned her to the village. The chapel is celebrated on Thomas Sunday , and even today the icon is never carried by vehicle or cart, only by hand.
